ADMIN NOTES:
–Phil Grant, Administrator

Dear Watershed Community,

This Wednesday, August 27, is Back-To-School Night at Watershed. All new families and students are invited for orientation at 6:00 p.m. There’ll be forms to fill out, information to share, and new friends to meet. Many staff members will be here to assist, and we all look forward to meeting you.

At 7:30 p.m., after orientation, we have our traditional Back-To-School Ice Cream Social. This is for everyone in the Watershed community (younger siblings and extended family are welcome). If you can help, call Leslie Kallas at 612-724-8467. The evening is a great opportunity to meet new friends and connect with old, meet new staff members, and sign up to help with school needs and programs. Because we’re a small school, we really need and appreciate our volunteers.

Enrollment update: our summer recruitment drive has been very successful, and our enrollment is now about 70 students. (Many thanks to everyone who helped throughout the summer.) That’s a good increase from June, when we graduated a large senior class and started the summer at about 50. I expect more students to enroll in the next few weeks, which will help us reach our goal of 90.

In the past, many students haven’t found us until the school year is underway, when they discover that there’s not a very good fit between them and their current school. That’s when we want them to know about Watershed, with its rich liberal arts tradition, embrace of creativity, and focus on community service. Families, please spread the good word about Watershed. We’re always looking to improve, so if you have concerns, let me know.

Currents is our name for the Watershed weekly newsletter. It’s emailed to everyone on our list. We work to include all families, friends and supporters of Watershed, so let us know if our list is incomplete or in error. We also mail a hard copy to everyone who wants one, so let Betty Edwards in the school office know if you’d like this service.

The next Watershed School Board meeting is Thursday, September 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m. All board meetings are open to the public. If you would like to be on the agenda, please contact Endel Kallas.

Questions, concerns, ideas? Give me a call at 612-871-4363 x206, or email me at pgrant (at)watershedhs.org. Have a great week!

STUDY GROUP OPPORTUNITY:

WHS Common Council would like to invite parents, students and teachers to join a study group on Monday night September 8th at 7 p.m. at Watershed to study Marshall Rosenberg’s work in non-violent communication. Rosenberg has been working in the field of conflict resolution for over 40 years. For more information about non-violent communication (sometimes called compassionate communication) see the following website: http://www.cnvc.org/.

NEEDED:

I would very much like to replace some of our plastic tables that are in disrepair with wooden ones. If you have a full size table to donate for student classroom use, please email Christina Beck at cbeck (at) watershedhs.org. Thank you!

STUDENT SUPPLIES LIST:

Please make sure your student has the following by September 2nd, the first day of school:

General: All students
- 1 ream unlined paper & box of tissues to share
- 8 report folders with pockets and center binder
- Set of colored pencils
- Pens, pencils and erasers
- Assignment book

For English:
- Journal (composition-style notebook preferred)
- Three ring binder with lined paper and at least 3 dividers
- Nice, but not required: dictionary (American Heritage preferred)

–Phil Grant, Administrator

Dear Watershed Community,

If you’re anything like me, you’re at least partly in denial. It’s mid-August and I’m wondering where the summer went! How can I get a couple more weeks of good weather and time with family and friends?

And yet, I’m tremendously excited by the approach of the 08-09 school year. The school board, staff and I have embraced the opportunity to make this the best year ever. We’re doing this by planning, recruiting and marketing extensively. We’re getting the word out that there’s this hidden gem of a charter high school in south Minneapolis, Watershed by name. It’s small and safe. It has a rich liberal arts curriculum and promotes community service and the arts. Teachers care for each student, and students are wonderfully accepting of each other.

As I’ve said before, we need everyone’s help in recruiting. Word of mouth is extremely effective. Spread the good word about Watershed. If you have concerns, let me know so we can address them.

*Back to School Night: Wednesday, August 27, at 6:00 p.m. for new family & student orientation; 7:30 p.m. Ice Cream Social for new and returning families and students. If you can help, call Leslie Kallas.

Good news: (1) Adler Graduate School has informed us that they are renewing our charter for three more years. Many thanks to Endel Kallas, our board chair, for leading this process. (2) Our annual audit is well underway and it shows that we’re financially healthy, with much improved clarity, transparency and accountability over the past two years. Credit here goes to our board, finance committee, and especially past Treasurer, Jeff Royce. (3) We have great new and returning teachers. See Faculty Chair Matt McElrath’s letter for more information. (4) We’ve set ambitious goals for this year, all aimed at improving students’ lives and learning. Again, see Matt’s letter for details.

This week’s newsletter marks the beginning of our school year publishing cycle. You can expect a fresh newsletter almost every week from now on. They’ll always be on our website. We also mail a hard copy to everyone who wants one, so let Betty Edwards in the school office know if you’re in this group. We also include a newsletter in our monthly mailings.

The next Watershed School Board meeting is Thursday, August 21, 5:30-7:30 p.m. All board meetings are open to the public. If you would like to be on the agenda, please contact Endel Kallas.

Questions, concerns, ideas? Give me a call at 612-871-4363 x206, or email me at pgrant (at)watershedhs.org. Have a great week!

NEWS FROM OUR FACULTY CHAIR:
Matt McElrath

The summer is quickly transitioning into a new school year, and I would like to take the opportunity to welcome both new and returning students. This newsletter is intended to inform you of many of the transitions that are occurring at Watershed High School, as well as prepare you for the first day of class, which will be Tuesday, September 2nd.

Back to School Night
Included in this mailing, you will find a calendar for the upcoming year. Note the Back to School Night on Wednesday, August 27th. Beginning at 6pm, new students and their families will attend Watershed Orientation. At 7:30pm returning students and families will join us for an Ice Cream Social. During both events, you will be able to complete necessary registration, scheduling and permission forms for the upcoming year. These forms are also located on the website on the Forms and Documents page. Alternately, you may request that forms be mailed directly by calling Watershed’s office.

Recruiting and Marketing
Watershed’s largest objective for the summer has been to increase enrollment in all grades through recruiting and marketing. Look for Watershed signs inside Metro Transit buses and listen for spots on KFAI radio. Also, Watershed car magnets are in production and will be available soon. Increasing enrollment will allow Watershed to expand curriculum, electives, staffing and other extra-curricular opportunities for Watershed students. If you know any students or families interested in Watershed, please have them attend one of the Open Houses listed on the enclosed calendar.

Electives and J-Term
Students will recognize changes as they register for courses this fall, especially during Friday electives. Students will be able to choose from course offerings in art, physical activity, mentoring, literature and music (We are currently pursuing alternatives for music courses). In preparation for the annual Medieval Feast, Watershed will also be unveiling a brand new January (J) term this winter. Students will have an opportunity to select from numerous activities including preparing for Medieval Feast, developing National History Day projects and creative writing at Philadelphia Farm.

Goals
In order to continually promote Watershed’s institutional development, the faculty has defined a set of academic and non-academic goals to structure the upcoming year, which include the establishment and pursuit of specific goals for all students, increased student participation and success in all subjects, especially math and a commitment to a steadily increasing enrollment. In addition, the faculty has adopted a new behavior policy that embraces relationships and communication amongst teachers, students and families. Watershed’s foundation of licensed and experienced educators will be integral in developing these relationships and helping ensure the success of these goals.

Faculty
The summer has witnessed several changes within the Watershed faculty, including the election of Matt McElrath as faculty chair during the June in-service. Pam Lien and Rhonda Lingen have elected to leave Watershed to pursue other career paths. We thank them for their contributions to Watershed and wish them well in future endeavors. At the same time, Watershed is excited to introduce Steve Andrews as the new Special Education teacher. We are also actively pursuing individuals to serve as Spanish, ESL and Theater instructors.

I’m looking forward to a great year at Watershed. Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns (mmcelrath (at) watershedhs.org -or- 612-227-0034).

July 17, School Board meeting

September 2, First day of 08-09 school year

Dear Watershed Community,

An enrollment marketing task force met last Thursday to develop summer marketing plans. Our goal is to get out the good word about Watershed and increase our enrollment. The message is straightforward: we have a good school, getting better all the time. With our small class sizes, an innovative and supportive faculty, and sense of belonging, Watershed offers a great opportunity to all of its students.

Background: during 07-08, we served about 80 students. Our largest class (c. 30) was our senior class. Our other classes are smaller, so we need to attract about 30-40 students to replace the class of 2008 and grow as we would like. With all of us working together, we can indeed grow. I know students are out there. As one recent touring family commented, “Why are you such a well kept secret?” So—secret no more! If you have ideas to promote the school, know people who are interested (or should be interested!), or can otherwise help, let me know.

The school office will be open on a limited basis all summer. We will check messages regularly and get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks.

Farewell department: Congratulations to our registrar, Pam Lien, who’s accepted an
administrative position with Quest Academy, a new charter school opening in St. Louis Park. Pam has been a wonderful asset to Watershed for years, and I know she will continue to do good things for the students at her new school. Thank you for everything, Pam, and good luck. I look forward to your visits to Watershed!

With Pam’s departure, I’m looking for a replacement. If you’re interested or know anyone who might be, let me know.

The next Watershed School Board meeting is Thursday, July 17, 5:30-7:30 p.m. All board meetings are open to the public. If you would like to be on the agenda, contact Endel Kallas.

Questions, concerns, ideas? Give me a call at 612-871-4363 x206, or email me at pgrant@watershedhs.org. Have a great summer!

Sincerely,

Phil Grant
Administrator

ADMIN NOTES:
–Phil Grant, Administrator

Dear Watershed Community,

Congratulations and best wishes to all of our 2008 graduates! I thought our commencement ceremony at MCTC last Saturday was wonderful. I always have such mixed feelings at commencement, for while I’m proud of our graduates, I shall miss them.

I want to thank all parents, guardians, and friends of Watershed for a fine year. Your support of the school throughout 2007-2008 contributed to the many successes we enjoyed. I wish everyone a great summer and I look forward to an even better school year in 08-09!

Though summer vacation has begun for students, teachers and administrators aren’t quite there yet. For example, Watershed is migrating to a new student information system called Power School. Our old system (SIPS) is obsolete and will no longer be supported by its maker. Accordingly, all faculty and staff will be trained June 9-11 in this new system. Later on, we’ll provide parent and student training. Look for more information on this over the course of the summer.

Another task for us during this workshop week is to prepare for a visit from our charter sponsor, Adler Institute, part of the charter contract renewal process. (Watershed was originally chartered in 2002 and the contract was renewed in 2005.) Among other things, Adler representatives will ask us to affirm our purposes, describe our programs for carrying out those purposes, and identify the specific and measurable outcomes pupils are to achieve as a result of those programs.

That’s more or less the technical language used in Minnesota law. In everyday terms, it reduces to such questions as “What are you doing for your students? How well are you doing? How do you know?” These are useful questions for our professional staff to ponder as we prepare for the Adler visit and plan for next year.

Sports report, as promised! During the weekend of May 31-June 1, our Ultimate Frisbee team participated in a tiring but fun state tournament. During the course of eight games over the two days, our intrepid disc-throwers acquitted themselves nobly. A few days later, our golf squad ended their season with “The Watershed Scramble.” (I believe you’ll have to ask a golfer what that means.) I understand that the student-athletes on both squads learned much about their sports, teamwork, and themselves this spring. Congratulations to all of them and their coaches and supporters, especially Matt McElrath, Mark McGarraugh and Christina Beck!

Lost and found department: Mack Wenberg (612-868-1129) reported a missing backpack after the last day of school outing at the park. It’s dark blue with gray backing. If you know where it is, give Mack a call.

I’ve received several calls and emails about lunch accounts; thank you. We will send out a final bill—most likely in our next mailing the week of June 16, along with final grades. (One of the anticipated benefits of our new Power School student information system will be greater ease in tracking lunch balances.)

The next Watershed School Board meeting is Thursday, June 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. All board meetings are open to the public. If you would like to be on the agenda, please contact Keith Dunder or Endel Kallas.

Questions, concerns, ideas? Give me a call at 612-871-4363 x206, or email me at pgrant (at)watershedhs.org. Have a great week!

ACCENT ARTS AWARDS ANNOUNCED:
–Maggie Rozycki

–Phil Grant, Administrator

Dear Watershed Community,

We’re almost finished! Yes, students are excited but so are faculty members. We’ve had a strong year, taking a good school and making it better. Our excellent veterans and wonderful new faculty collaborated to make it so, all on behalf of your sons and daughters. Thank you for trusting us and supporting Watershed High School.

In a few days, we bid farewell to all students, though we look forward to seeing most back here in the fall. (OK, seniors, we expect you’ll visit as new alumni when you can.) Faculty have another full week (June 9-13) of Powerschool training, assessing the year just ended, setting goals for next year, and preparing for a visit by a team from our charter sponsor, Adler Institute. I’ll have more on these important topics next week.

While our faculty and board are still putting the final touches on our 08-09 school calendar, much is complete. In general, our calendar resembles the Minneapolis calendar—for example, we begin on September 2. There are significant differences, however. The biggest is Watershed’s introduction of a January term between first and second semester. This J-term will likely be 12 days long and afford students the opportunity to focus on one or at most two credit-earning classes. One certain offering is Medieval Feast, which we expect will benefit from this approach. Other possibilities include studio arts, math, science, and social studies. Early planning ideas are emphasizing field trips and projects, but of course there’s more work to be done over the summer. If you have questions, concerns or ideas about this exciting development, please let me know or talk to any of the faculty.

I thought I would have golf news this week but I don’t. Perhaps next week, along with a report on how our Ultimate Frisbee team did at a recent tournament.

We sent out lunch program invoices recently. Thank you to those who’ve already paid on your account. If you haven’t had a chance yet, please try to settle up in the next week. That will help us close the books on 07-08. We’ll have a final bill to send out after Friday, June 6.

SENIOR NEWS:
–Deb Pelinski

Senior Trip:
And they’re off! The bus arrived promptly at 5:00 and seniors began loading it up and settling in for their Arkansas adventure. Important considerations:

Seniors will be getting back to Watershed around 8 a.m. on Friday, June 6th. They will then go into school and clean out their lockers, retrieve any personal stuff and then participate in our end-of-year tradition where the seniors “pass the torch” to the juniors. It takes place in Fair Oaks Park. After that, students have typically hung around for a bit to get yearbooks signed. I don’t imagine the seniors will want to hang out very much so they should be done with the above activities around 11:00 a.m.

We are NOT having a senior picnic Friday evening. That has also been done in the past but they did not have one last year and we won’t be having one either.

Graduation begins at 11:00 a.m Saturday, June 7th. SENIORS NEED TO BE THERE BY 10:00 a.m. for graduation rehearsal.

Senior Play:
It was a wonderful production! Congratulations, Seniors, on a job well done. How lovely to end your Watershed years on such a high note!

ADMIN NOTES:
–Phil Grant, Administrator

Dear Watershed Community,

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. With just two weeks of school left, it’s good to be rested and ready to finish strong—despite the distractions of spring weather. I’m hearing good things about the senior play coming up next weekend, and preparations for their class trip and graduation are almost complete. Juniors, sophomores and freshmen, of course, continue with all classes until June 6, the last day of school for students.

This week, we bid farewell to Jamie Hepner, our Dean of Students, who has announced his resignation from Watershed High School. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors (see below), but he will be missed. For my part, I have valued his dedication to education, commitment to students, and energetic support of Watershed High School. I know he will go far, and it’s been my pleasure to work closely with him this past year.

After the news and weather comes the sports: the Watershed Ultimate Frisbee team has had some notable successes this season, defeating some major schools, showing up well against state powerhouses, and developing as a team. Congratulations to all team members and our Athletic Director and coach, Matt McElrath. Watch this space for golf news next week.

We sent out lunch program invoices recently. Thank you to those who’ve already paid on your account. If you haven’t had a chance yet, please try to settle up in the next two weeks. That will help us close the books on 07-08. Thank you.

The next Watershed School Board meeting is Thursday, June 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. All board meetings are open to the public. If you would like to be on the agenda, please contact Keith Dunder or Endel Kallas.

FROM JAMIE HEPNER:

Dear Watershed Community,

As this year of great achievement comes to a close, I want to let you know about my plans for next year. I will not return to Watershed in the fall. I plan on attending school to get a Masters in School Counseling with a focus in Chemical Dependency. The last four years impacted my life tremendously, and I thank you all for your support, guidance and partnership.

Sincerely,
Jamie

PLANT SALE UPDATE:
–Sheila Weidendorf

The Plant Sale is over for another year. (We do, however, have a few odds and ends of veggies and herbs left—contact me if you’d like some!) Here are our preliminary numbers: Expenses came to $2996.31 ($2874 for plants, $84.86 for planters, and $37.45 for potting soil, some of which we sold at the sale). Our total sales reported to date come to $5,433.25, leaving us with a profit of $2436.94, which will pay for the Seniors’ bus trip to Arkansas. Thanks, everyone who helped plan, work or purchase plants!

Have you ever wondered how you got the life you’re living? Did you think life was going to be different than the one you have? Are you living the life of your dreams?

The Sycamore family may be a little eccentric and untraditional but one thing is for sure: each family member is living the life of his or her dreams, a life that they love. When one of the family members falls in love with a banker’s son, the philosophies of following one’s dream or conforming to what is expected clash and the fireworks explode–literally. A great play for the whole family.

Adults: $7.00
Alumni (former WHS graduates): $5.00
Students 7 yrs. and up: $3.00
Under 7 yrs. old: Free

Graduation:
Senior graduation is being held at Minneapolis Community and Technical College on Saturday, June 7 starting at 11:00 a.m in the theater. The receptions will follow at MCTC in the conjoined outer lobby. Please contact Ben Timko at btimko (at) watershedhs.org with the number of invitations you’d like to order. Each senior family may order up to 10 invitations.

NEWS FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT

On May 7th, Hunter Bodene-Yost was awarded one of two $1000 Scholarships in the Freshwater Society’s Art Contest. This statewide contest expressed the theme, “Water is Life” through art. At the ceremony, it was noted with astonishment, that Hunter is a 9th grader. Only 11th and 12th graders have won up until now. Hunter’s work is now the property of the Society to be used in their promotional materials. (Coming soon, a photo of Hunter’s drawing).

Hunter’s artist statement explains his piece entitled Reflection: “I tried to encompass the entire theme ‘Water Is Life’ rather than a single subcategory such as degradation or contamination. To represent a world without water or one that has abused such a vital resource (such as ours), Istripped the color away and made jagged, craggy mountains and gnarled, barren trees. To show the beauty and life-giving power water holds, I gave color to the reflection along with blooming foliage, lush grass, and snow-laden mountains. The figure represents mankind as a whole and is reflecting upon the degradation we have caused. The figure’s contact with the water shows the efforts made by some to preserve it as well as the damage others have done.”

ROBERT MCDERMOTT ON THE EVOLUTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE KARMA OF AMERICA

The Twin Cities Branch of the Anthroposophical Society is sponsoring two lectures with Robert McDermott on June 13 and 14 at the Minnesota Waldorf School, located at 70 East County Rd B in Maplewood. A $10 donation will be requested. Contact Becky Streeter for more information at 952-546-3351, or becky_minnesota (at) yahoo.com

Friday, June 13, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
“Steiner on Evolution of Consciousness”

This lecture (to be followed by discussion) will explain what Steiner means by the evolution of consciousness, with particular emphasis on the characteristics of Hebraic and Greek consciousness, Christian consciousness, and the rational-scientific consciousness of the modern West. The lecture will explain Steiner’s conviction that contemporary culture and society, including education, arts, sciences, psychology, and religion are the result of a gradual and increasingly profound alienation (or loss of participation) of the human being from the divine, from nature, and from all interiors. The lecture will conclude with an account of how by imagination and service individuals and groups can overcome fragmentation and alienation, thereby advancing toward love and freedom, the twin goals of the evolution of consciousness.

Saturday, June 13, 10:00am - 12:00noon
“The Karma of America.”

This lecture (to be followed by discussion) will attempt to identify in very broad strokes the distinctive karmic task of the four centuries of thought and culture that have created the United States of America. To this end it will offer a broad characterization of America’s political history from the genius of the founders through Lincoln to the present political situation; its cultural history from the mid-19th century New England renaissance to jazz and film; the philosophical significance of William James, John Dewey, and A. N. Whitehead; and its religious solutions, from Edwards and Emerson, Black Churches and Martin Luther King, Jr., the rise of fundamentalism, and the emergence of a radically multi-faith culture. In conclusion this lecture will introduce the threat of ecological devastation, the latest and most profound challenge and opportunity to define America and its karma.
