Book Launch Party
Marianne Dietzel, parent of present (Soren ‘11) and former (Kevin ‘99) Watershed students, is holding a party to launch her book, Laughing in a Waterfall: A Mother’s Memoir. All are welcome to attend on Sunday, July 18, 3-6 PM at the Minnesota Waldorf School (MWS). Presentation is between 4:00 and 5:00; refreshments and book-signing before and after.

Minnesota Waldorf School
70 East County Road B
Maplewood, MN 55117
(Near Hwy. 36 & Rice Street)

Laughing in a Waterfall is a mother’s story of her daughter’s life and death and their continuing relationship. At age five, Nina met her friend Kirsten at the MWS. Thirteen years later, both girls were killed in a car accident. Nina’s foundation for life was formed by the five years her family spent living in Camphill Village Minnesota, a rural intentional community including adults with development disabilities, and by her education using the Waldorf approach. In letters exchanged with her friends, and in excerpts from her journal, Nina’s own words reveal her rich inner life and become a source of wonder for her parents.

After the accident in New York State, where Nina and Kirsten were attending a Waldorf high school, the support of the community in holding a home vigil for the girls gave Marianne courage to face her unfathomable loss. Back in Minnesota, with a teenager and young child still at home, and a dying mother 500 miles away, Marianne’s own spiritual resources came to her aid in transcending her grief.

This poignant memoir offers insights into how to create a new culture around the sacred threshold of death and keep a living connection to those on the other side.

A Special Word From the Finance Committee
–Ann Moore, Finance Chair

Many thanks to all who contributed to our end of the year appeal. In these difficult economic times, your financial support means more than ever. Though our budget year ended June 30, our needs continue. Any donation to Watershed is a wonderful way to celebrate the many achievements of this year, thank faculty and staff, and set the stage for a successful 2010-2011 school year. Again, thank you for your support.

ADMIN NOTES
–Phil Grant, Administrator

I hope your summer’s going well. I’m excited about our summer school program as well our new Community Ed program starting next Thursday, July 8. See below for details on both.

I have sad news. Science teacher David Kimori reports that his grandmother died recently. Because he’s going home for the funeral and mourning period, he cannot teach his science class scheduled for July 6-15. As we were unable to find a suitable replacement on such short notice, the class was canceled. Students previously enrolled in science for the next couple of weeks may choose Rachel’s Bookbinding art class or Linda’s math class, space permitting.

If you would like to send condolences to David, send them to us at Watershed and we’ll forward them on to David and his family.

Summer Hours at Watershed
• July 6-July 15, open for business and for summer school 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., except Fridays.
• July 19-August 6, limited hours, to be announced.
• August 9-12, open for business and summer school.
• Check Currents for calendar and hours updates throughout the summer.

SUMMER SCHOOL 2010
• Linda’s Reality Math class begins Tuesday, July 6, at 9:00 a.m. in the 3rd floor math room.
• Rachel’s Bookbinding art class begins Tuesday, July 6, at 9:00 a.m. in her second floor art room.
• David Kimori’s science course has been canceled, as mentioned above. Students previously enrolled in science for the next couple of weeks may choose Rachel’s Bookbinding art class or Linda’s math class, space permitting.
• Call the school at 612-871-4363 for more information.

Board Notes
The board last met June 28. The next meetings are July 12 and 26, both at 3:45 p.m. The regularly scheduled meetings are the 4th Monday of each month, but the current volume of work led to scheduling an extra meeting July 12. For more information, or for any questions about the board, contact chair, Leanne Mfaligundi (at) mfali001@umn.edu.

Wild Food Summit Report
The day after school got out, a motley crew of Watershed’s finest students embarked on a journey up to the White Earth Reservation to learn more about wild edibles and get a few English credits on the side. As I sit here reflecting on the crazy experience of taking ten students camping (at times, during tornadic weather), my mind is drawn to the real reason for this trip. What was the Wild Food Summit?

The best answer I can give is that it was a chance for a group of kids from the city to step outside their element and reconnect with the natural world. It was a field be-speckled with fireflies, and lying outside looking at the stars, and dancing under torrential downpours, and eating some of the best food I have ever tasted. I don’t kid myself that the Wild Food Summit profoundly altered our lives. I was worried that it would be a time for students to break rules but it wasn’t that so much as it was a time for us to make up rules of our own. Up north our days weren’t judged by an hourly wage or by a report card but by how we felt at the end of it. In time our blistered feet and burned skin will heal, perhaps to be replaced by other wounds from adolescence. But, regardless of where life takes us, I hope that we will still find time to stop time, to step out of the rat race, to lift our heads above the tree line and hear the wind whisper across an empty field.
–Emily Hanrahan

Gardening Update
Watershed’s community garden is a’growin’. The gardening elective class worked hard all spring to establish our first ever school garden. We are growing everything from sunflowers and hollyhocks to tomatoes and carrots. Now that it is summer, there are fewer able bodies around and we could use your help. We are fighting a pretty difficult battle against thistles these days and anyone who has a spare moment to do a bit of weeding or watering would be very much appreciated. If you are interested in coming to any of our weeding parties please contact Emily at hanr0011 (at) gmail.com. As I start to plan curriculum for the fall, I am running across a few questions I thought I might pose to the Watershed community, seeking resources or advice.

1. Who knows about saving seeds? I have little experience, so I’m looking for help.

2. We would like to to do some food presevation ie: canning, fermenting, freezing, drying. I have a bit of experience with this, but could still use help.

3. Who can help with a composting program or rain barrels?

4. Also, due to our Waldorf roots, some of our students have expressed interest in learning about biodynamic gardening. This I know very little about.

If there are any community experts in any of these fields it would be excellent to have you in the classroom. We are especially looking to collect canning and composting bin supplies. Thanks again. Happy Gardening! –Emily

Book Launch Party
Marianne Dietzel, parent of present (Soren ‘11) and former (Kevin ‘99) Watershed students, is holding a party to launch her book, Laughing in a Waterfall: A Mother’s Memoir.
A Special Word From the Finance Committee
–Ann Moore, Finance Chair

Last week, I wrote about Watershed’s finances. As a follow up, and to help us balance our budget by June 30, we sent out a Watershed Spring Appeal a couple of weeks ago. An end of the school year donation to Watershed would be a wonderful way to celebrate the many achievements of this year, thank faculty and staff, and set the stage for a successful 2010-2011 school year. Thank you for your support.

ADMIN NOTES
–Phil Grant, Administrator

What a splendid graduation ceremony we had last Saturday! With tears, laughter, and much joy, we sent our Class of 2010 forth. Congratulations to Mariah Klingeman, Cameron Mihock, Stephanie Ramirez, Mattie Rose, Sarah Waugh, and Kelly Weigel; to your families and friends; and to the staff and entire Watershed community. Your hard work has paid off, and we’re proud of you!

Summer Hours
• June 21-July 15, open for business and for summer school 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., except Fridays and July 5.
• July 19-August 6, limited hours, to be announced.
• August 9-12, open for business and summer school.
• Check Currents for calendar and hours updates throughout the summer.

Summer School
• Steve’s Film Studies class begins Monday, June 21, at 9:00 a.m. in the social studies room.
• There’s limited space for the classes during July 6-15 and August 9-12.
• To review the complete summer school info sheet, click whs-summer-school-info.pdf.
• Call the school at 612-871-4363 for more information.

Yearbooks
2009-2010 Watershed yearbooks are available for $20.00 in the school office. Make checks out to Watershed High School or pay with cash.

New Watershed T-shirts
The first annual Watershed T-shirt design competition was won by Marco Grell with his narwhal, voted for by students during their class meetings a few weeks ago. The design has been silkscreened onto organic cotton teeshirts by our staff and students, and they are available for sale at the school for $10.00, cash or check (payable to Watershed High School). Stop by the office to purchase one. This design is a limited edition; when it is gone, it is gone. Currently we have all sizes available, small up to XXL (they are preshrunk).

Enrollment
We continue to accept students for the fall, though space varies by grade. Our next Open Houses are Saturday, June 19, at 10:00 a.m., and Tuesday, June 22, at 7:00 p.m. For more information, call Rachel, our enrollment coordinator, at 612-871-4363 x219, or email her at rkoniar (at) watershedhs.org.

Tentative class schedules for fall
Students received tentative schedules for fall classes. The goal was to give them preliminary information about what they can look forward to. I expect changes between now and September, simply because our actual enrollment at that time will dictate how many classes we can offer. If you have questions about the tentative schedule, please call Betty at 612-871-4363.

Board Notes
For more information, or for any questions about the board, contact chair, Leanne Mfaligundi (at) mfali001@umn.edu. The next board meeting is Monday, June 28, at 3:45 p.m. Note that this is a corrected date; previous notice of June 21 was incorrect.

Volunteer Request
Does anyone know how to fix washing machines? We have one that needs some attention. If so, leave a message for Jeff Tornio at 612-871-4363 x130. Thanks!

ADMIN NOTES
–Phil Grant, Administrator

This is it—the last days of this school year. Congratulations to everyone for a successful year! I hope everyone has a wonderful summer. Note that Currents will continue to publish throughout the summer, but on a less frequent schedule.

Yearbooks
2009-2010 Watershed yearbooks will be available for sale beginning Friday, June 11th. They are $20.00 each; make checks out to Watershed High School or pay with cash. Congratulations and thanks to this year’s yearbook crew, headed up by Toni Kerans.

Please send in the money with your student Thursday or Friday if they wish to purchase one. This design is a limited edition; when it is gone, it is gone. Currently we have all sizes available, small up to XXL (they are preshrunk).

Last Day of School
Friday, June 11th, is Watershed’s last day of school for this year. Students will meet with their classes at 9:00 a.m. to wrap up loose ends, clean out lockers and sign yearbooks. Students will also be working with faculty to clean classrooms for the summer. At 11:00 a.m., students will gather in our gardens for a senior send off ceremony and ice cream. Students will be dismissed after the ceremony, around 11:30 a.m.

Graduation
Watershed honors its class of 2010 on June 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Walker Community United Methodist Church, on the corner of 31st Street and 16th Avenue. Reception follows at the same location.

Job Opening
Watershed seeks a qualified person to serve as Academic Director for the 2010-2011 school year. Duties include program and curricular leadership, supervision and support of faculty, and dean of students. The qualified candidate will possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education and three years teaching experience. Administrative licensure preferred, though outstanding candidates in a licensure program will be considered.

Possible additional duties could include athletic director and technology support.

This position has been created by consolidating the duties previously carried out by teachers, some of whom are moving on. Accordingly, the board charged a task force to examine school governance and structure. This new position is a result of that task force’s work.

For more information, or to apply, contact Ann Moore, search committee chair:
amoore (at) watershedhs.org

Summer Calendar
• June 14-18, Teacher workshops and meetings. School office will be open.
• June 21-July 15, open for business and for summer school except Fridays and July 5.
• July 19-August 6, limited hours, to be announced.
• August 9-12, open for business and summer school.
• Check here for calendar updates throughout the summer.

Tentative class schedules for fall
Students recently received tentative schedules for fall classes. The goal was to give them preliminary information about what they can look forward to. I expect changes between now and September, simply because our actual enrollment at that time will dictate how many classes we can offer. If you have questions about the tentative schedule, please call Betty at 612-871-4363.

Successful Spring Play
Congratulations to everyone involved in this spring’s play last weekend, The Importance of Being Earnest. I enjoyed the Friday night performance and heard that Saturday night was even better. Way to go, theater program!

June 5th, Neighborhood Festival
A huge thank you goes to those loyal students and faculty who comprised the Watershed parade section for the FRNNG neighborhood parade on Saturday June 5th. Facing grey skies, rain, cold and a tiny turnout from the rest of the neighborhood (the parade was us and a peewee baseball team), several students involved with the Spring play, Kristin, and Betty represented Watershed in the brief parade, inviting our neighborhood to attend the Saturday evening performance of the Spring play. We also had a table at McRae Park for a few hours during the festivities, talking to our neighbors about the school, and trying to stay dry during a rainy afternoon.

Please call the school at 612-871-4363 (ext.120) or email me if you want to help recruit new students. Nellmorningstar (at) yahoo.com

Last week, I wrote about Watershed’s finances. As a follow up, and to help us balance our budget by June 30, we’re sending out a Watershed Spring Appeal this week. An end of the school year donation to Watershed would be a wonderful way to celebrate the many achievements of this year, thank faculty and staff, and set the stage for a successful 2010-2011 school year. Thank you for your support.

Spring Play
Watershed’s spring play is The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. This hilarious tale of mistaken identity and fun Victorian romance features the seniors. The play is June 4 and 5 at Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church, 1620 East 46th Street at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 adults and $3.00 students and will be sold at the door. Come, support our student actors and enjoy the play!

ADMIN NOTES
–Phil Grant, Administrator

Many, many thanks to departing teachers Matt McElrath, Mark McGarraugh, and Ben Timko. (See below for details on Matt’s plans.) All have contributed much to Watershed over the years and they will be missed—though we certainly hope for visits. All best wishes to them in their future endeavors!

Enrollment
We continue to accept students for the fall, though 11th and 12th have very limited space.
June 5th, Neighborhood Festival
Looking for students, parents, and staff to help out on Saturday, June 5 at the Field Regina Northrop Neighborhood (FRNNG) Festival. Starting at 10:00 a.m. there will be a short parade that ends in McRae Park. We will have some of the actors from our Spring Play in the parade, and would love to have as many others as possible join us. At the park, we will have an information table, handing out our brochures and doing some free face painting. There will be food for sale, vendors, a petting zoo and pony rides. Free balloons and ice cream will also be available. Please call the school at 612-871-4363 (ext.120) or email me if you can assist. Nellmorningstar (at) yahoo.com

Athletics • Ultimate Frisbee
Watershed was resoundingly victorious in its final Ultimate Frisbee game of the year against White Bear Lake last Thursday evening. Although we were frighteningly short on players—we had 8.5 to their 30— Watershed’s athletes quickly pulled away from the Polar Bears to achieve a 15 to 6 win. Unfortunately, the Waves could not wrangle enough players to compete in this year’s state tournament, last Thursday evening’s match was Watershed’s final athletic event for the year.

Last Day of School
Next Friday, June 11th, is Watershed’s last day of school for this year.

My Future Plans
I have exciting, yet bittersweet, plans for next year. I will be moving to El Salvador with my girlfriend Eileen in July to teach at Escuela Americana, an American International School in the country’s capitol, San Salvador. We will be teaching social studies at Escuela for at least the next two years. It was an incredibly difficult decision to leave Watershed and I will take many memories and relationships with me. Thank you all for your commitment and contributions to the school.

Board Notes
For more information, or for any questions about the board, contact chair, Leanne Mfaligundi (at) mfali001@umn.edu. The next board meeting is Monday, June 21, at 3:45 p.m.

Solomon’s Porch Garage Sale
One of our neighborhood churches, Solomon’s Porch (100 West 46th Street, just the other side of 35W from Watershed), is holding a garage sale this week. They say that things are priced really well. Ten per cent of their proceeds will go to help fix a women’s shelter in North Minneapolis helping women start over who are getting out of prostitution. We’re helping by loaning five tables for the week. For all garage sale fans, more info on their sale is available at http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/gms/1749007716.html

Volunteer Request
Does anyone know how to fix washing machines? We have one that needs some attention. If so, leave a message for Jeff Tornio at 612-871-4363 x130. Thanks!
